Roles
About
The Officers make up Nebula Lab’s Board of Directors. This Board consists of 5 key member roles: a President, Vice President, Executive Director, Secretary, and Treasurer. Each of these positions has a valuable role to serve in assisting the organization in making long term strategic plans for the future and assisting in managing the administrative overhead of the organization to remove the burden from lower levels of leadership. The following pages outline the specifics of each role, resources to assist the current holder of the position, and advice from previous Officers on how to best handle commonly encountered problems.
Distribution of Powers
It is important to remember that although there is a perceived hierarchy in terms of how each member reports and the powers of oversight, no member of the officer team holds direct power over any other member, instead the officers should seek to reach consensus before acting and should hold one another to account. The distribution of powers across the officer team seeks to make it such that no single officer can perform unilateral action without needing the consent of at least 2 other officers. For example, the president may make a public statement on the organization’s intent to act, but without the authority of the Vice President and Executive Director, the Project Leads and Division Heads should not carry out those actions. The Executive Director may seek to release a project, but if the Executive Director doesn’t think that the organization standards are met and the President doesn’t assist in launching a marketing campaign and announcements to external stakeholders, the launch can be successfully blocked.
All actions that may have lasting impacts on the organization’s brand and reputation require consent of multiple board members by design. As such, Officers ought to make attempts to meet regularly to ensure that their interests are inline with on another and the best interests of the organization.
Interactions between Officers
Officers are not just defined by their individual roles but also through how they are intended to interact with one another. Make sure to take note of this on each role’s individual page.
Organization Chart
This organization chart is based upon the matrix style organizational structure (if that is not evident by its appearance). Make sure to look into the organization structure page to find out more about why this was chosen and how to best leverage the advantages and disadvantages that come with this structure.
